About seventy artists and representatives of various arts organisations enjoyed a full day of talk and discussion on the general topic of Funding and Marketing the Arts. We are very grateful to the Selwyn District Council which made the venue available to us at no charge, to the various speakers, and especially to the Forum/events subcommittee of the Arts Canterbury executive under the leadership of Dan Gordon, who developed and carried out the plan for the day. In this newsletter we include a summary of notes that were taken at the forum. If you would like the full notes, email or write to the Administrator, admin@artscanterbury.org.nz. Executive sub-committees Four sub-committees carry out the work of Arts Canterbury, and report to the full executive at its monthly to six-weekly meetings. The sub-committees and their current activities are – Forum/Events (Convenor, Dan Gordon) This committee organised the recent successful Canterbury Arts Forum, and is now concerned with matters arising from it, especially proposals for future gatherings. Exhibitions (Convenor, Marie Rusbatch-Dawson) The Exhibitions committee is organising a series of art exhibitions to be held in 2011. These will be in galleries in most parts of Canterbury, and are a great opportunity for members of Arts Canterbury to exhibit in their own areas. The venues so far confirmed or in process are Christchurch, Banks Peninsula, Waimakariri, Selwyn, Hurunui/Kaikoura, Ashburton and Timaru. Details will be made known as they are finalised. This is an exciting initiative that will be much to the benefit of Arts Canterbury members. Media Development (Convenor, Wilson Henderson) This is the committee that is working on the website re-development and new arts guide. At this stage, a contract has been signed with Acclipse NZ Ltd and a deposit paid to start the work of re-designing and planning the functioning of the site. A number of interesting and effective features will be in the new site, the details of which will be released to members as they are finalised. In the meantime, make sure that you visit the website at www.artscanterbury.org.nz which is kept updated by Bill Hainstock. Funding/Membership (Convenor, Christine Hainstock) The function of the Funding/Membership committee is precisely as its title says. Its main purpose is to make sure that Arts Canterbury’s activities are adequately funded, and that the membership is kept maintained and strong. In the Funding area, we are at present awaiting the outcomes of two applications – the Canterbury Community Trust, for resources leading to the second edition of the Canterbury Arts Guide; and to the Eureka Trust, to meet the website re-development cost.
