I am inspired by the animal kingdom both here in beautiful New Zealand and abroad. By painting some of our precious endangered creatures, I hope to focus attention on their plight.
I love researching my subjects thoroughly, including their habits and habitat: striving for accuracy, but also including emotional and atmospheric components.
My process starts with planning dynamic compositions and doing intensive preliminary sketches. Working in oils allows me to use a variety of different approaches according to my subject and the mood I want to create. I can capture the smallest detail and also use expressive brushstrokes.
I also enjoy painting animal portraits of companion animals: dogs, cats, birds and horses. Each one has a different personality and by the time the portrait is finished, I feel I know them very well!
