Arts Canterbury Inc. Newsletter 2007/2008

THE ARTS GUIDE IS A REALITY !

From the Chair:

A special welcome to the many new members of Arts Canterbury especially those who are listed in the Arts Guide.

The great event of Arts Canterbury to date is the publication of the Arts Guide. “The art of canterbury” is the product of four years’ work and careful consideration. When it came off the press before Christmas, it exceeded the hopes even of those of us who have worked so long on it. Comments have been glowing. The Caxton Press designer, Sue Elliott, has done a wonderful job of bringing together the best of Canterbury art into a publication that is itself a work of art.

The only other individual that I feel I must single out at this stage is the editor, Anna Dunbar. Anna not only brought her long journalistic experience to the Guide, but also engaged in tact, firmness and understanding in her dealings with the nearly 300 of you who provided the art material that makes this such a distinctive publication.

As members of Arts Canterbury, it is now up to all of us to promote and sell “the art of canterbury” by putting it in front of everyone we think could be interested, and convince them that this long awaited treasure is a must buy!

Thank you everyone for your support in the birth of “the art of canterbury”.

David

From the Editor:

With the Arts Guide now a reality we can all be justifiably proud of the

outcome. There was such a wealth of art waiting to be tapped and I’m sure the second edition planned for 2009, will bring even greater interest from contributors who have missed out this time. We have more than 250 artists and galleries listed in the Guide and a membership of 280.

Four thousand copies of the Guide have been printed and we encourage all members to buy as many copies as possible for the cost price of $22.50 and to sell for the full price of $34.95 – a nice little profit to support your art! Gallery owners are especially asked to stock numerous copies in their

gallery space.   Please contact me at the ACI office, Room 202, First Floor, Old Chemistry Building, the Arts Centre, phone 379 9120 or email admin@artscanterbury.org.nz

There has been a great deal of interest already with several galleries and artists buying 10 copies even pre publication.  More than 70 members have also bought between one and 11 copies of the Guide.

Several Take Note and Paper Plus stores, as well as the airport book shops have copies for sale and you’ll see them appearing in various places just as soon as we can get them out there. We have worked hard to get as many as possible distributed pre Christmas for obvious reasons and that has worked well.

Anna

The Arts Canterbury Annual General Meeting

The AGM was held in the Canaday Gallery, COCA, on November 8, 2007. Two members, Kathy Mitchell and Tony Wenborn resigned and one new member, Maeve Allen, was added.

The Arts Canterbury Inc. executive committee, past and present, have worked long and hard to publish this Guide about you, the artists of Canterbury, and will continue to work tirelessly for you.

Your Executive Committee

The ACI executive committee consists of 11 members, all volunteers.

David Sell (Chair) – Christchurch An Adjunct Associate Professor of Music, David’s background is academic and non-visual arts related but without his guidance and ability we would not have the quality publication we now have before us.

Christine Hainstock ONZM (Secretary/Treasurer) – Christchurch It is ironical that as with David, Christine has no immediate connections with the visual arts and her life has been music orientated for the past 40 years. She is currently the South Island representative for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Maeve Allen – Methven Our newest executive member, Maeve specialises in highly professional mosaic garden or courtyard earth panels and looks forward to injecting her energies into Arts Canterbury.

Geoff Cloake – Timaru A commercial artist and photographer entering into the digital age. Geoff has been a long time member of Arts Canterbury and promotes the arts interests of South Canterbury.

Roselyn Cloake – Timaru As an emerging artist Rose brings the element of youth to the executive and, together with her father, Geoff, represents us well in the South Canterbury region. Rose’s strengths lie in the web technology region.

Anne Field – Christchurch A world-class weaver and spinner of 40 years and author of six books, Anne has a studio in the Arts Centre and had major input into the research around what publisher we should go with. She certainly got that right!

Jill Henriod (Deputy Chair) – Tai Tapu An established international artist, Jill brings a wealth of knowledge and ability to Arts Canterbury and is a great advocate for us at every opportunity.

Maxine Inglis – Christchurch An executive member of one year, Maxine is an artist and is always willing to help in any way.

Dee Innes – Windwhistle Dee has worked tirelessly for Arts Canterbury and even snow and ice seldom deter her from making meetings!   Dee creates patchwork, paints and supports the arts at any opportunity, especially in the mid-Canterbury and Selwyn districts.

Lorraine Jacobs – Kirwee An artist of international repute, who works mostly in watercolour and acrylic, Lorraine has travelled extensively but now works in Kirwee, where she operates

a studio and gallery and happily gives much of her spare time to Arts Canterbury.

Marie Rusbatch-Dawson – Waikari An original executive member, Marie is a potter in Waikari and teaches pottery in and around Christchurch. Marie is a great advocate for Arts Canterbury and especially promotes the interests of the North Canterbury region.

A valued “honorary” member of our executive is Marlene Le Cren. Arts

Adviser to the Christchurch City Council, Marlene has been behind us all the way and in times of need always seems to find a way of helping us out. In other words – she is our good fairy! We appreciate your help so much Marlene. A huge THANK YOU for all of your support.

The Website

Our next project is to add more than 50 listings to our website. Those of you who have not requested a profiled listing will automatically be added as a classified listing. For artists and galleries who were members pre-Arts Guide, and have not yet renewed your membership, please do so promptly, so that you can remain on our website.

Wishing you all the best for the New Year and successful Guide pushing!

Thank you all so much for your support.

Arts Canterbury

Changes in membership and website arrangements

·       Membership year

There, has been some uncertainty as to what constitutes a year for membership purposesYour executive has decided that a membership year should be the financial year of Arts Canterburythat is, July 1 to June 30. As a transitional measure, those who have become members since January 1, 2007 will have their listings carried over to the 2007/2008 year at no additional cost.

·       Website year

As from July 1, website listings will also run for the year July 1 to June 30. As a transitional measure, those who came on line since January 1, 2007 will have their listings carried over to the 2007/2008 year at no additional cost.

·       Classified listings.

Because of the cost involved in entering listings, your executive has decided that from July 2007, those with “free” classified listings will need to be members of Arts Canterbury.
