Aigantighe

Aigantighe Art Gallery in Timaru is the home of art in South Canterbury, with a rich collection and diverse exhibition programme. Its name is Scottish Gaelic for 'at home' and is pronounced 'egg and tie'.
The Aigantighe holds an extensive permanent collection of national and international art from the 16th century to the present day. A continually changing display of works from the collection is shown in the original Edwardian house that formed the art gallery when it was donated to the city in 1956.

The modern wing displays solo and group shows of New Zealand artists, along with travelling exhibitions from around the country and overseas.

The extensive gardens are always open to the public, showcasing a wide variety of permanent sculptures.

Deanna Gracie

I gather creative inspiration from the beauty and form of my natural surroundings, my love of narrative, memories and observation of the world and people around me. When I am in the studio time disappears and I feel a real sense of achievement in a finished piece, of another discovery made or another story told.

Joan Batten (Joan Le Cren)

A school art prize at the age of 12 inspired me to take up oil painting. Unable to take art at secondary school, I learned by reading and observing the work of others. Much later in life Nancy Tichborne taught me the intricacies of watercolour, a more challenging medium. But I like both styles.
My paintings have sold at Art Society exhibitions as well as private sales and commissions. Many have been given as presents or family heirlooms.
My style is very traditional. It would be hard to improve on the beauty I see around me.

"Until 1983 I signed my paintings “Joan Le Cren”. Many of these are appearing for resale or reframing now. I am happy to renew the signature for anyone who has one of those.”

Anna Schoolderman

Inspired by the characters (human and otherwise) of rural New Zealand, I work in oils, pastel, watercolour and charcoal, varying my approach depending on the feelings I wish to convey. I particularly enjoy capturing that special moment of interaction between man and nature - realistic works which tell a story.
I hope to inspire a sense of wonder for the simple things of life which we so often overlook, and an appreciation of the great Master Artist whose handiwork is my source of inspiration.

Geoff Cloake

Ever-changing shows of atmospheric light over our diverse landscape compel Geoff to hunt regularly for unique sights.
Thinking of himself as a photorealist photographer he finely manipulates his prints to emphasise his feelings of natural wonder and awe. Reality easily surpasses into abstract, to propel his most creative work
Photography has been Geoff's passion since youth, taking him along many paths including exhibiting, tutoring, judging, guest speaking and authoring. His love for the outdoors now focuses on fine art printing, publishing, lecturing, and tutoring. Thinking of himself as a photorealist photographer he also enjoys creating stimulating abstractions to propel his excitement about visual and emotional experiences. Interested in both nature and humanities, his photography is as extensive as anything a camera can picture. Geoff is most compelled by diverse landscapes and regularly goes out hunting to 'capture' New Zealand's tremendous sights. To Geoff, the land is merely a stage to be watched for something to happen. With great patience, timing and amazing atmospherics, shows become incredible and ever changing. Geoff simply gathers all this uniqueness as computer data. The real art begins later as he finely manipulates his raw material into his ultimate expressions of natural wonder and awe. Date and Place of Birth - 12 April 1954 - Timaru.

Ruth is a painter and stone sculptor living in Christchurch.
She moved from the UK to NZ in 2006 and has become an award winning artist both for her paintings and her sculptures.
Ruth’s work has been described as original, intriguing and emotionally charged. I am a print-maker and paint in oils. In printmaking I use the method of solar etching, embossing and collagraph. Vivienne Bashford

Producing special treasures for special people I work on commission with kiln fired and furnaced glass windows and panels (up to 1.5x2metres) along with sculpture, utility ware, etc.
Having served a life long apprenticeship I am able to marry ancient technology with modern to produce both practical and decorative works.
Believing that the artists role in society is to challenge the viewer to think outside the square, my works often comment on social responsibility and/or celebrate the environment and life experience of people close to and around me.
Curator Julika Gotte of Germany nominated my work for the 2014 Palm Art Award and this began a journey I did not anticipate. I was fortunate that 3 of my kiln fired glass sculptures placed me in the role of nominee.

Terry Gallie

I started making pottery in 1984 at the Southland Polytechnic with John Kakl until I moved to Dunedin 1986. I attended classes there at the Otago Polytechnic Ceramics Department part-time.
When I moved to Christchurch in 1989 I began producing work for sale for the first time and potted full-time. In the mid 90’s I began tutoring at Papanui High School, and then tutoring at Canterbury Potters Assn the following year. Over the intervening years untill the present day I have continued tutoring and have been an active member of the Club being their President twice. I have continued to attend classes and I have enjoyed attending a multitude of week-long and weekend workshops offered by fine potters from all over New Zealand and abroad– learning new skills and swapping ideas.
I exhibit every year at the annual Canterbury Potters Assn Exhibition held at the Canterbury Museum as well as other Exhibitions as they arise. I have work in Collections in Australia and the Canterbury Museum as well as many private collections.

Joanne Webber

Born in New Zealand, Joanne works from her studio in Christchurch. She completed a BA (Hons) in 2009, studying Philosophy of Art, Art History and History. Her paintings are informed by a variety of subjects, including history, advertising and a concern for the natural environment. With an interest in fine detail, work is defined by the use of bold design which dance on the canvas and draws the eye around the scene. Joanne often uses irony to comment on events which produces quirky and thought provoking works.
Joanne has exhibited throughout New Zealand, as well as overseas, including an exhibition in the Chelsea Art District of New York City. Her works are held in collections in Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy (Benetton Collection). Little River

Mirage-like, the Little River Gallery appears on the horizon, a welcome sight for the traveller on Highway 75, the route to Akaroa, the tourists Mecca. Step inside and you're greeted by a riot of colour shape and texture. There is such a range of art, it takes even the fleeting observer, time enough for the busy cafe next door to prepare your food and coffee.
There is an amazing range of tasteful, quality and 100% New Zealand made mementos and nostalgic keepsakes to conjure up the uniqueness of New Zealand and Maori culture. Deeper into the gallery the art takes a turn to more specialised media, oil on canvas bronze, cast glass. Here you will find yourself eye to eye with some of New Zealand's pre-eminent artists' original fine artwork.

Dorothy Shrimpton

I studied Fine Art at Reading University and Norwich. My work is inspired by natural form and its relationship with energy projected by light, movement and their dynamics as I see them. I overwork paintings to create depth or portray a certain mood. The majority of my work uses oil based paint, a few employ a multimedia approach.

All my compositions are mood dependant and, although abstracted, are still recognisable from their starting points. I want to create a sense of place or thing in which one finds new and interesting facets to look at everyday rather than a photographic image.

Ngaio McKee

I am based in Ashburton, and have lived in Mid Canterbury most of my life. My favourite subjects are mountains, rivers and lakes, old buildings, flowers, and still life. My style is usually traditional, but I do sometimes venture into abstraction and have a sound knowlege and enthusiasm for all aspects of sketching and painting.
Accurate drawing, good composition, colour harmony and tonal contrast, and the direction of light are important considerations in all my work.

Marilyn Austin

Marilyn is an artist with a passion for rich warm colours, texture and works with strong visual impact.
She is known for her semi-abstract cityscapes, landscapes and textured forms. Many layers of acrylic paint are used in the works and then acrylic glazes are applied to give the rich vibrant depth of colour.

" I believe that an artwork must speak from the heart and uplift the viewer making them want to return to look again...
To see something new and inviting. If I can achieve this then I feel that I have succeeded".

Marilyn's paintings are in collections in New Zealand and overseas and can be viewed in Christchurch at Artbox Gallery 1/16 Loftus Street, Papanui, Christchurch.

Mike Smetham

I like to paint animals and birds, and occasionally landscapes and flowers, in watercolour, as when I started some forty years ago, but now almost exclusively work in acrylics
. My style tends to be somewhat hard-edged, and I try to imbue my work with something more than strict representational depiction. Don Binney has always been one of my 'gods', with a style to be emulated.
I am not prolific but generally have something on the go every two months or so.
Years ago I became a working member of the Centre of Contemporary Art and exhibited with them, and latterly with a Christchurch group called Eklektika .

I have always knitted and sewn for the family and have been interested in crafts. I have worked in and belonged to craft galleries using fabrics and making saleable articles.
In 2012 I came up with the idea of creating something completely different by making works of contemporary art from fabric. With endless options of fabrics and colours used, the designs are exciting and very different. On completion all works are framed under glass to complete the professionalism.

I have won 3 Awards for my artwork including Best in Show.

Keith Morant

I have been a painter for over 50 years and while I have been fortunate to hold my main exhibitions in Europe and America, my home and studio is in Christchurch. My work is an effort to express the universal through the specific and to this end my paintings are often informed by music and literature. It is my wish that my work, while initially seen only by the eye, will eventually be assimilated by mind, thus proving conducive to some small expansion of human conscious awareness.

Karin Lange

Often my work is informed by what I pick up around me; visually, interpersonal, seasons, the elements, colour- combinations that I find interesting. I love spending time outside and spend a considerable amount of time observing skies.
Walking the beaches of Christchurch, something I already loved doing when I was a child. We grew up very close to the beaches of the Baltic Sea, sailed a lot, had heaps of freedom to rummage and roam (I had three older brothers, need I say more!) and those experiences have become indelible ones in my make-up.

Joanna Mackenzie

Joanna is a painter, printmaker and art educator who has worked in Asia and New Zealand, with her images being held in private collections in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada and Germany.
The theme of many of her paintings is movement expressed in light and colour. This dynamic flow of activity is caught in the moment of creating each image, although there is always a suggestion of the continuum of movement. Joanna enjoys the way printmaking offers the opportunity to explore layers of colour, light and movement, in a more structured form. Joanna offers art classes (painting, drawing and printmaking) that explore the way colours can express our feeling for life in various soul moods. For some years she taught at the winter and summer schools for the University of Canterbury Extension Studies department. She originally trained as a Designer for Moving Image (Dip.F.A.) at Canterbury, returning after having her children, to study Art and Architectural history and to complete a B.F.A. in Printmaking .Her art classes often make references to contemporary and historical artists' work, give practising artists a chance to review their practice or lead beginners to realize their artistic potential in a wide variety of techniques and media.

Carol Moffatt

I love water colours and the moods that the water and colour create together. It is, at times, unpredictable but nevertheless is stimulating because the end result is not contrived.

The world around me is where I draw my ideas and inspiration from. Trees, mountains and water together with plants and flowers that live in the environment create my water colour world. The Canterbury environment is blessed with all these attributes and I feel privileged to live and paint in it.

Orion Powerhouse Gallery

The Orion Powerhouse Gallery began its life in historic Akaroa in 1911—as the building which housed the hydro-electric power equipment. In 1970 local resident, Patricia Bosshard established a gallery and concert venue in the empty building. She organised concerts (and a film society there as well) from 1970. In 1977, an incorporated society took over the running of the Powerhouse as a gallery and concert venue. The newly refurbished 'Orion Powerhouse Gallery' comes to life in the warmer months when Akaroa is full of visitors and holiday-makers. The gallery hosts exhibitions featuring artists from Banks Peninsula and beyond, many of national and international recognition. It also provides a wonderful venue for intimate musical events and varied workshops throughout the year.

Clare Wilcox

Clare Wilcox’s paintings refuse to stay still, they respond to light and glow with brilliant colour. Her works tackle the question of how our use of water is affecting the land around us. Using contemporary interpretation to tell her story through large pieces of art, Clare uses colour to create visual environments that absorb us into them, dancing colours of acrylic paint and dense charcoal lines covered in resin move rhythmically across her abstract landscapes. “I absorb environments like blotting paper and find my impulse is to bridge what I see and feel onto canvas with texture, colour and form."

Christine Maynard

Christine enjoys painting abstract landscapes and designs. She does a range of sizes but particularly loves doing large paintings that will fit into both modern and traditional interiors.

Christine has always been creative, having owned a wedding decorating business, and having a strong interest in interior design.
Her works are all about the layering and revealing of history, weathering and time-passing on the landscape and ancient objects that still survive.
Strong influences on her paintings are: patinas on buildings, ancient floor & wall tiles, natural organic shapes, ancient fabrics and costumes, foliage, aged metals, and extensive travels. These give her a starting point for each painting.

Erica York

Although I dabbled in pottery, floristry, photography and hand-crafted cards, I found there was always an underlying desire to paint. Finally, in 2004, I attended art classes and voila! The latent talent burst forth.
With encouragement from family and friends, I began selling cards and paintings at The Arts Centre in Christchurch. Having had works in a few galleries in Christchurch, I've since sold many original paintings, prints and cards within NZ and overseas.
I like to take an original approach to art, using bold colour, experimenting with different media, often adding a sprinkle of humour to surprise the viewer.

So many ideas, so little time!

Sandra Hobbs

New Zealand, a landscape photographer’s paradise.

I feel very fortunate to share my images with those who are unable to travel to these locations. Often people say to me being a landscape photographer must be easy, the landscape never moves. However, the light is what you photograph and the light is always changing. When you release the shutter, you capture a moment in time that can never be repeated.
I love the thrill of the chase, when all the planning and preparation come together, the excitement of capturing just what you had envisaged or if you are lucky something better.

Vicki Knudsen

I have been an artist for about 20 years. My subject matter is mainly figurative, in the past concentrating mainly on portraits. Some paintings I have thought and laboured over, while others come with relative ease. All come from my heart, my experiences and observations of life. Basically, I am self taught. I attend untutored life drawing classes on a regular basis and spend most of my time at home in solitude painting or gardening.

Exchange Christchurch - XCHC

We offer affordable studio/production space to creatives, a venue for them to showcase, and a cafe/bar to connect them & their work with an audience of other creative practitioners and the general public.
Because we have exhibitions changing almost every week and regular creative events, we can definitely say that local artists and the general public crave experiencing the arts and others creativity in new ways.

We also have accommodation to bring people who visit Christchurch into an exciting creative space so they can connect with the culture and arts we share. It is also open for artist in residence so that they can easily find and connect with local creatives and bring their practice and process and share it with us.
