Welcome from the Chairman
Spring weather, successful activities, good financial support and fewer aftershocks are giving Arts Canterbury, artists and galleries increasing confidence. I have been encouraged by the emphasis on the arts of the thousands who comment on the reconstruction of central Christchurch, and the wonderful opportunities opening up out of the horrifying experiences of the past fourteen months. Life is all the sweeter for it.
Take your place on the website now
Our website annual fee includes membership of Arts Canterbury, giving you the right to give notice of your events and exhibitions, convey snippets of arts news, and voting rights at our AGM. Being part of a dedicated art website linking many artists together means that you and your art are seen whenever another artist’s page is viewed.
Even better news is that -
your executive has looked hard and realistically at costs and incomes, and come up with a much reduced and simplified structure. This must be the least expensive website ever for artists. Furthermore, everyone on the website has the advantage of the presence of everyone else.
The new website fees structure is -

‘ArtOpportunity II’
Our May ‘ArtOpportunity’ was so successful that your executive decided to organise a second exhibition, in December. It is partly inspired by some people who visited the May exhibition, clutching their EQC payouts with which they could replace original artworks that had been destroyed in the earthquakes.
So we decided to hold an ‘ArtOpportunity II’, with an emphasis on breakables and “loseables” – such as ceramics, glass, jewellery, and small sculptures. Members were invited to express interest, and a sufficient number did so, encouraging us to go ahead with the plan.
Many more of us are now getting our EQC contents payouts. This, together with Christmas rushing up on us, is expected to lead to a great deal of interest. Potters, sculptors, jewellers, and other artists who specialise in original objects, should take advantage of this opportunity. Look at “Information for Members” under “News and Events” for more details.

The Canterbury Arts Forum
The Forum, organised jointly by Arts Canterbury and the Christchurch Community Arts Council was an interesting gathering of representatives of Community Arts Councils, Creative Communities committees and other arts organisations in the Canterbury region.
Submission to the Christchurch City Council
Your executive responded to the invitation by the CCC to submit comments on the proposed central city plan. The main points of our submission were:
· Approval of the concept of the Avon River Park
· The Avon River Park should have a strong arts presence, not only in a richness of arts work, but also of arts activity in the form of workshops and studios, accommodation for artists, together with gathering places.
· the Arts centre be returned to its original intention as a centre of low cost arts facilities – studios and workshops, galleries, performance spaces, entertainment, social gathering spaces with associated relevant retail shopping.
· Arts Canterbury recommends that some form of arts input should be built in to consents for new buildings. A suggested format is to require that a proportion of capital cost of the building be spent on approved art, as, for example - commission arts works for public places in the building; make spaces available in the building for arts activity, studios, artist accommodation, etc.; fund an ongoing artist in residence scheme; install art work on the building itself (beyond the architectural design of the building). There should be an appointee within the City Council who is responsible for coordinating arts projects, and an advisory panel of artists to consider applications.
· Arts Canterbury applauds the plans to build a new central library, and trusts that this will incorporate local art, art activities and art education.
· Arts Canterbury commends the overall transport plan. Experience in other cities has shown that sturdy design and robust art work and art activity in stations and interchanges is generally respected.
Finally!
Two things to remember
