Other Canterbury News

Donnations of artwork sought.

Alzheimers Canterbury is holding its annual 'Arty Auction' fundraiser this May on Trademe, which features art and autographed literature.   Each year we approach artists, authors, musicians, and jewellers for the event - last year particularly, the event gave us a much-needed morale boost throughout the aftershocks as we opened the packages of lovely things to get them ready for auction.

We work in the community with people with dementia, and their carers and friends, providing social work support, volunteer programme, education and group support.  We are entirely not-for-profit.  All proceeds from our Arty Auction go towards the Christchurch dementia community.

We are currently looking for donations of art, and are wondering if you would be able to put the word out about it to your artists?  We already have some North Island artists contributing, but I am keen to see some Canterbury work included!  We would be very happy to include your website/artists' websites in the auction details, and promote it on our Facebook and Twitter pages, and in our regular newsletter.

 Christchurch - an artists' tribute

Denis Robinson has compiled a moving tribute to Christchurch with a collection of paintings of the city as it was before the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. With 120 paintings by 19 artists, this book captures beautiful and evocative views of the city and its character buildings.

All of the artists have submitted personal introductions to their works, which range in place from the central city to the outlying coastal suburbs, including Banks Peninsula and the port of Lyttelton. Many artists returned to old sketchbooks to discover drawings still waiting to be painted, and new artworks sit alongside paintings completed in earlier days, while others have been sourced especially for this book.

Together they form a stunning and poignant collection of New Zealand art and a warm and positive tribute to Christchurch, helping to preserve the past of the beautiful garden city for generations to come.

Destined to become a collector's item, this is a book that will be treasured by Cantabrians and visitors to Christchurch alike.

A new historic  Art Book
A book has just been released that will be of interest to those who follow the art of Canterbury. There is much in Warren Feeney's book to think about - and react to. As the author, who advised and assisted with Arts Canterbury's recent exhibition, ArtOpportunity, says - "It is still assumed in most histories of the arts in New Zealand that the Canterbury Society of Arts, alongside other art societies, hindered the growth of the arts in this country. This book seeks to correct that impression."

CSA: The Radical, the Reactionary and the Canterbury Society of Arts 1880-1996, by Warren Feeney, published by Canterbury University Press, October 2011, RRP$49.95, hardback, 224pp, ISBN 978-1-877257-94-0
