Grace Downs is a Christchurch-based artist whose work reflects a thoughtful engagement with people, place, and the natural world. Raised in Wellington, she developed an early love of arts and crafts, though painting became her primary focus later in life.
While raising her family in Hanmer Springs, she drew inspiration from the alpine landscape and began painting seriously, creating large acrylic still life and landscape works for exhibition. After moving to Christchurch, her practice paused for several years due to professional and family commitments.
In recent years, Grace has returned to painting with renewed focus. Working primarily in oils, she creates intimate portrait studies alongside contemporary landscapes inspired by the local environment. Her work seeks to capture a sense of presence, joy, and light.
Through her paintings, Grace offers a sensitive and personal perspective on contemporary portrait and landscape painting in Aotearoa New Zealand.
