Louise Chilvers is a wildlife biologist who started carving Oamaru stone about eight years ago. Wildlife and art have always been important to her, so being able to combine the two has become a rewarding pastime.
Louise really enjoys working with Oamaru stone. She mainly works with recycled stone from old buildings, which means the stone she is working with is often odd shapes with different grades, colours, and grains. This means many of her pieces have a story behind them, with most of those stories starting in nature.
Louise also loves working with copper, the colour of it, how copper, when exposed to light, heat, acid and other elements, creates stunning patinas and colours. Louise is hoping to combine copper and stone in the future to see how they work together.
