Landscape Painting at Halswell Quarry

Come out for a day of plein air landscape painting at Halswell Quarry. Join instructor Mike Southern for a half-day workshop that will present a whole slew of issues unique to painting out-of-doors as well as addressing general painting issues such as composition, values and colour mixing, to name just a few. Old Master Technique for Portrait painting

 20 April 9am – 5pm and 27 April 1.15 – 5pm   Worcester Boulevard Christchurch

Join instructor Mike Southern for this informative and fun introduction to the indirect painting methods of the Old Masters of the Renaissance and Baroque eras. Students will begin by painting an underpainting in earth tones and then proceed into a grisaille which is the skin tones painted in monochrome. This allows students to focus on understanding the values of their subject before proceeding into colour. Once the grisaille is completed, colour is glazed over the underpainting and grisaille with thin layers of pigment. If you enjoy portraits, this class is for you but is also very useful for many subjects and styles of painting. Two classes over two Saturdays. Saturday, April 20th from 9am – 5pm and April 27th from 1:15pm – 5pm at Te Matatiki Toi Ora, The Christchurch Arts Centre.

Figure Drawing and Painting

Join instructor Mike Southern for an exciting drawing and painting workshop that explores the complexities of working with a live model. Nothing improves your drawing quicker than working from the live model so be sure to put this on your calendar if you have any interest in drawing or painting the human form. This all day workshop at the Christchurch Arts Centre begins with familiarising yourself with the proportions and anatomy of the figure with charcoal and pencil. After lunch, we dive into painting!
